Dr Alexander ‘Sandy’ Burnfield MBBS DPM FRCPsych. 1944 – 2021

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Dr. Alexander ‘Sandy’ Burnfield.

Sandy was an Advisor and Consultant in Therapeutic Approaches providing training, mentoring and guidance for over ten years from the creation of Fair Ways in 2004.

He was the inspiration for the creation of our ‘hub’ or centre approach providing child-centred therapeutic support in a non-clinical setting. He taught staff to develop positive non-punitive relations with service users to understand the underlying reasons behind behaviours and these skills and principles remain at the core of our therapeutic ethos.

In 2015 Sandy became one of the founding trustees of Fair Ways Foundation and in 2018 we named our first therapeutic hub in his name.

“We are all so very sad at the passing of our fellow Trustee and colleague. I worked especially closely with Sandy in 2015 at the inception of the Charity and had the greatest respect for his insights and contributions to our work. In late 2020 when he decided to retire, he expressed his wish to keep in touch with all of us at Fair Ways saying “You guys are a big part of my life.”

Ian Davies, Chairman of the Trustees

“For sixteen years I have personally leaned on Sandy whenever I have had to deal with a significant or complex challenge in work. He was a professional inspiration, a great teacher, a mentor and above all a friend. Those of us who had the privilege of knowing Sandy can all be safe in the knowledge that we are so much better for having known him.”

Mac McHugh, CEO of Fair Ways

Above all, Sandy was our friend, and we will miss him.
