Fostering family spirit

Fostering family spirit

For many children and young people in care, life can often be unsettling and disruptive so making a positive impact on your foster child’s life can make the world of difference. Here are some top tips for fostering family spirit and making memories with your foster child or children.

  1. Celebrate

With Christmas only a few months away, it’s the perfect time to get celebrating and enjoy some family time together. Birthdays, placement anniversaries and other achievements are a great reason to do something fun or special as a family to celebrate. Such celebrations don’t need to be elaborate or expensive, a simple trip to the cinema or movie night at home with everyone’s favourite snacks are all fun memories for the future.

  1. Create traditions

No matter how long a child or young person is placed with you, get them involved in any family traditions or create new traditions for them to come up with and be involved in.

  1. Take photos

Photos are a great way to take a snap shot of time and remember it forever, so make sure you take plenty of family photos. You could even encourage them to make a photo album so they can remember all of their best times.

  1. Share memories

Talk! Chat with your foster child or young person about good and happy memories both whilst they have been placed with you and beforehand. Discussing fun times keeps the memories alive and can cause many laughs too!

  1. Have fun

Enjoy the time you have with you foster child or young person. It may be that you are unsure of how long they will be placed with you, so make the most of the time you have. Smile, laugh and have fun together.
