Fair Ways Foundation is a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

The Charitable Objectives are to

  • Address social exclusion
  • Improve health and wellbeing
  • Promote education and literacy
  • Support vulnerable children and young people
  • Support vulnerable people and families

 

These Charitable Objectives are achieved by:

  • Establishing education bursaries for young people who have left the care system. TheFoundation ensuring that further education opportunities are available to individuals who otherwise would not have this opportunity.
  • Supporting, financially or otherwise, services delivered to young people in need,who otherwise would not qualify for the funding that is required to meet that need – such as therapy delivered by qualified BACP Registered therapists.
  • Acquiring or developing property to provide suitable accommodation for care leavers who otherwise would not qualify for adult services support.
  • Promoting and educating society with respect to the difficulties and issues faced by those looking after children and young persons.

The Foundation owns Fairways Care (UK) Ltd., a long established and successful trading company providing foster care, residential, healthcare and education services. This is a vibrant and growing business and in 2017 listed at No 5 in the Sunday Times Top 100 Best Not For Profit Organizations.

 

1. Trustee Role

Our trustees usually serve a 3 year term, renewable by mutual consent, and with staggered rotation. The role is to ensure good governance of the Foundation, and to make awards to Fairways Care (UK) Ltd and other applicants based on a business case proposed.

Board meetings are held quarterly in the Solent area. The role is voluntary, expenses are reimbursed.

As a member of the Trustees Board you would be asked to provide independent judgement and objective challenge on a range of issues including, good governance, allocation of funding, financial and operational performance and future strategy.

Trustees hold themselves accountable for always behaving in the best interests of the Foundation; to act reasonably and responsibility in all matters relating to the Foundation; to make decisions in line with good practice and the rules set out in the Foundation’s governing documentation and to only use the Foundation’s income for the purposes set out in our governing documentation.

 

2. Experience and competencies

Applications are invited from candidates who have:

  • Sector knowledge and experience in Social Care {children & young people (CYP)} and/or Health Care {CYP and young adults} and/or Education and/or Fostering. It is desirable that this experience has been gained within a commercial setting
  • Excellent professional judgement
  • A knowledge of the Care Quality Commission and Ofsted inspection and accreditation processes together with the practical application of these processes
  • Board Committee Experience (in either a commercial or non-commercial setting). Knowledge and practice of charity or voluntary organisational governance is desirable but not essential
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and integrity
  • The ability to challenge others with respect and an open mind
  • The ability to be total confidential and to role model the highest standards of ethical behaviour and honesty in their dealings with others
  • An understanding of when they may have a conflict of interest and be willing to exclude themselves from discussions or decision-making on such matters
  • Personal drive and good self-management
  • Independence of thought and action but who are willing to take advice and listen to those with different experience/knowledge
  • Experience of working effectively with others in a team made of those from a variety of backgrounds and interests
  • An understanding of how to plan and implement Strategy is desirable
  • A good professional network and appropriate networking skills are also desirable
